NOTE: Talking to work friends from Germany, Leonard Patterson found out that Karl is 'German", and Charles is the "French" interpretation of the Karl.

Family rumors has it that he went to the military school in France (like Annapolis). Came to US. Owned a large amount of land in Kansas City sold it got a large sum of money. He gave it to a priest and went to fight back in Europe. The money disappeared. He was Richard William Kern's grandpa.

Translation from French -
I sent a message to you but I do not know if it arrived on your premise I confirm to you well, Charles is French of origin but its mother tongue is the Alsatian one; a German dialect and which it undoubtedly spoke all its life. To the 6 years age it went to primary school and started to learn the French. After the war of 1870/71 Alsace become German it learned the "Hochdeutsch"; It had left the school around 13/14 years to work. At that time Oberhaslach was a village very poor and catholic, the population lived of a little agriculture (meadows which cows and fruit trees) and especially the drill (loggers and sawmills). At 20 years it had carried out its military service in the German army as any Alsacien.Pour to emigrate at 23 years with U S A; to seek fortune. Like good Alsacien it had kept a certain nostalgia of France and especially of the armies of Napoleon; I think that it has clearing its history. Moreover it were not to know to swim, the river nearest (Beetle) was with more than 10 km and in summer it had helped the parents with work. J ' also have a question to pose to you; why Johann Wilhelm Schnelzauer did he become John William Kern? I hope that these which explanations on the life of Charles in Alsace will allow you to put to an image righter on vautre back large father and to include/understand its quite complicated history for many people. With the pleasure of reading you soon. "Ae schener Gruas year of Charl" Well the hello to Charles into Alsatian.
Original Letter -
l'armée allemande comme tout Alsacien.Pour émigrer à 23 ans aux U. S .A;

Interesting information. My mother is an Oates who's father (David) is the son of Richard and Elizabeth (Scott) Oates. Richard was a coal miner who lived near Pittsburgh. They had 13 children, including William (1897-1972). Richard came from Cornwall and Elizabeth from Glascow, Scotland (clan Lindsey?). I have more information if any of this fits your William.

I am looking for information on the family of my GGGrandmother, Elizabeth SCOTT. She married Richard OATES in McKeesport, PA in 1883 by the Justice of the Peace. According to the 1900 Census, they lived in Jefferson Township., ie Coal Valley(?). The Census also gives an immigration year of 1882 with her mother, Elizabeth Robison Lange SCOTT. Her two brothers are David SCOTT, with whom she lived, and "Sandy" SCOTT. Her sister was Mary (SCOTT) ALLISON who's husband moved to Grand Junction, Colorado to work on the local newspaper.

Any information on Elizabeth and Richard as well as the rest of the SCOTT clan would be welcome.

Simpson Mary A. [Female] b. 1869 Mt. Vernon, Illinois - d. ABT 1912

Ernest Schnelz married Mary Simpson of Mt. Vernon, Illinois in St. Louis, Mo. where the apparently worked together. She was very intelligent, graduating from a business school in 1888, an unusual event for a female in those days. She was employed by the famous Harvey House Restaurants in a managerial capacity and as best we can determine, Ernest was a pastry chef in the same company. They married in 1898. She contracted TB and they moved to Dermott, Arkansas in 1901 where she subsequently died in about 1914.
