Notes from Diane Kodet, wife of a LaForest decendent. "...Were you aware that Antoine LaForest (1834 - 1932) who was a son of Pascal LaForest (1790 - 1875) married Mary Dupre (1841 - 1917) who is the granddaughter of Old Mother Rodd, who is somewhat of a legend in the Port Huron area. (I can tell you everythiing you want to know about her.) Old Mother Rodd's Indian name was Nah-nah-kee-zhe-go-qua, which means Midday Woman. She was a member of the Sarnia Reservation, but spent much of her time on this side of the River. She was married to Alexander Rodd, who was killed near the Wadhams Bridge in 1812 by another Indian tribe. Alexander was half Indian and half French. Old Mother Rodd lived to be 113 years old. She is buried on the Sarnia Indian reservation's cemetery (we have been there.)..."

"...Also, another tidbit, Charles H. LaForest, II, 1869 - 1953, a son of Antoine's and Mary's was the killed on Ravenswood Rd. where he lived when the fierce tornado came through in 1953. He was the only person killed on this side of the river, though there were others in Sarnia when the tornado traveled over the river. My 93 year old mother-in-law remembers when he was killed and has often talked about it...."
According to Judy Bagley, niece of Charles, Charles was the only death in this tornado
Tornado date event# time deaths injuries scale county#
MAY 21, 1953 002 1521 2 68 F4 147
At 4:21 p.m. Thursday - a mild spring day - a tornado touched down just west of the main intersection in Smiths Creek. What unfolded in the next three hours was a tale of devastation.
The tornado of May 21, 1953, followed an east-by-northeast path that roughly paralleled Ravenswood and Dove roads. It swept across the south side of Port Huron, skipped over the river and struck downtown Sarnia with lethal force.
Remarkably, the tornado remained on the ground for about three hours, cutting a 150-mile swatch from Smiths Creek to the outskirts of Stratford, Ont.
Five people died, four in Canada and 83-year-old Charles LaForest, who had scoffed when family members suggested he take shelter in the basement of his Ravenswood Road home.
More than 40 people were hospitalized in St. Clair County, and at least 60 more in Sarnia, where the mayor declared martial law. On the Michigan side of the river, 40 homes were destroyed and nearly 400 sustained significant damage. At least 500 people were left homeless in Ontario.
Amid the devastation were miraculous accounts of survival:
Sherman Stone and his bulldozer were lifted 15 or 20 feet into the air near Smiths Creek. Man and machine returned to earth safely after a 50-foot flight.
Laylonne Pringle, 15, was home alone with her 12-year-old sister, Louise. As the house shook, Laylonne took Louise by the hand and rushed toward the front door. Just as she grabbed the doorknob, the house collapsed around the terrified sisters, but they suffered only minor injuries.
Less than three weeks later, on June 8, 1953, the deadliest tornado in Michigan history would strike Beecher, a suburb of Flint. It killed 116 people and injured 844.
