Yesterday, Shari and I went to the funeral of Eugene M. Gleason and
spoke with one of his relatives who is into geneology and is very familiar
with the family history. She told us that Cornelius Gleeson (Gleason),
born around 1810 in Ireland and his wife Bridget had eight children.
One of the oldest was Patrick Gleason who married Johanna McGlaughlin
from whom came Shari and Sue's grandmother Elizabeth Patricia Gleason who
married Lewis Papinaw and the rest is well-known history.

Another of the children of Cornelius and Bridget was John William
Gleason. He is the grandfather of the Eugene M. Gleason who just died.
John William Gleason had two sons, John Wiliam Jr. and Peter. These two
brothers married two sisters. John William Jr. married Mary Ellen Dunn
while Peter married Sarah Dunn. Peter and Sarah are the parents of the
recently deceased Eugene Gleason.

Thus Eugene is of the same generation as Sue's mom.

They told us that Yale is full of the descendents of Cornelius and
Bridget, who, by the way, are both buried there in an easy-to-find grave.
They have old land maps that show which of the chidren of Cornelius and
Bridget had which farm.

By the way, all of these Gleasons that we met yesterday were good
looking and of above-average intelligence, so the Kerns come from good
stock. Have fun with this info.

A letter written to Sharon Kern-Wild from Micheal Gleason, date thought to be 1999:
Mrs. Sharon Wild
619 Ridgemont Lane
Ann Arbor, Michigan

Dear Sharon,

I enjoyed our talk last night, and thought I would jot down a few facts I have discovered regarding our ancestors as an enclosure to the pictures I have for you.

Patrick Gleason, the father of Elizabeth Papinaw, was born in Newport Parish, Count Tipperary, Ireland in 1838. In 1839, his parents (Cornelius and Bridget) and older brother Martin left Ireland for Canada. Martin died on the trip over, and was buried at sea. After a short stop in Quebec, which was required of all immigrants at the time, the family ended up settling in Stratford, Ontario area. Cornelius and Bridget had 6 other children 95 survived to adulthood), all of which were born in Ontario.

As a side note, the original spelling of Gleason was Gleeson. As you might know, it was illegal for Irish Catholics to be educated until in the 18th century. Consequently, neither Cornelius nor Bridget could read or write. While in Quebec, a French Catholic Priest gave them identification to proceed to Ontario, and spelled it Gleason, which has stuck to this day.

On September 24, 1862 Patrick was married to Johanna McGlaughlin at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Stratford, Ontario. Patrick and Johanna had two children in Canada from 1864 and the time they moved to Michigan, which was 1867. They moved to the Yale area and had a 160 acre farm east of M-19 on Galbraith Line Road.

Another side note I find compelling is that not only did Patrick and his family move to Michigan, but as far as I can tell, the entire Irish Catholic community did as well. I have pulled countless records for very distant relatives, which all trace back to the Stratford area. I have yet to uncover what caused this movement, but one hypothesis is that there was a Irish Catholic revolt in part of Canada as well as England in 1867. This might have led to the mass migration, which occurred the same year.

While in Michigan, Patrick and Johanna had 7 more children, all of which survived to be married. In chronological order, the children of Patrick and Johanna are:

Margaret B. 1864 Married Bartholmew Lynch
Catherine (Kate) B 1866 Married William Grierson
Cornelius B 1868 Married Eleanor Mullany, who died in children
birth in 1901. Married Elizabeth Kinney after the death of his first wife.
Robert B 1873 Married Mary Kinney, sister of Elizabeth (my Grandparents)
Mary Ann B. 1875 Married George French. Daughter Elizabeth Stine still living
John B. 1876 Married Elizabeth Murphy (married in Mt. Pleasant)
Bridget B. 1877 Married Louis Frye
Elizabeth B. 1881 Married Lewis Papinaw
Patrick B. 1886 Married Mildred ??? (still working on this line)

Sometime during the 1890’s, the parents and four youngest children moved to the Mt. Pleasant area. I have not determined why, but Patrick did have a younger brother, Cornelius that had moved there during the 1880’s (that is really interesting story we can discuss at some time! Still not discussed with the older generation.) In the early 1900’s the family moved to Port Huron area, except for John, who had married while living in Mt. Pleasant. Patrick lived in Port Huron until his death in 1914. Johanna passed away in 1927. The are both buried in Mt. Hope in Port Huron. Quite a few of their children, and their spouses area buried alongside Patrick and Johanna.

So there is a quick history of our immediate family. I still have loads of work to do, but slowly I am making inroads. If there is anything you can add to the story, please do not hesitate to call or write.

I hoe you enjoy the pictures. If I come across my others I will let you know.
