For those of you interested in pushing the ancestry line back further, here is the result of a combined project that Judi Mutal and I did back in early 2002. We had observed that we were turning up the name Kerns rather than Kerns in the Columbiana County area in the early 1800s. Judi made the connection with a descendant of Daniel Kerns of Sandusky County, Ohio, and I made the present-day connection to someone in Sandusky County who verified the document that published the biography of Daniel Kerns.
The document is the Commemorative Biographical Record of Sandusky and Ottawa Counties, published in 1896 by J.H. Beers and Company. At pages 158-159 of the book is the relevant portion of the biography, paraphrased here: "Daniel Kerns . . . was born June 23, 1817, in Comumbiana (now Mahoning) county, Ohio, son of Abraham and Elizabeth (Misheye) Kerns, who were natives of Pennsylvania, where the paternal grandfather, George Kerns, was also born. . . . The parents of our subject removed to Ohio during its pioneer days, and settled upon an 800-acre tract of land that formed a part of Washington township, Sandusky county. . . . The family was a large one, numbering eleven children, namely: Mary, who was killed by accident during her early girlhood; John of Wayne county, Ohio; Anna, who became the wife of Michael Powell, and died leaving four children - Albert, Richard, Susan and Lydia; Sarah, who became the wife of Samuel Powell and died when well advanced in years; leaving a large family; Jacob, a retired farmer of Alliance, Ohio; Daniel, subject of this sketch; Solomon; Lydia; Lavina; Josiah, an M.E. minister of Kansas; and Isaiah of Newton, Iowa, land agent, notary public and abstracter of titles."
There is quite a bit more to this biography, but it does identify Anna and Sarah by the Kerns name rather than Kern. It also identifies their mother by the name Misheye, but I have been unable to find that name anywhere else, particularly in census records, so suspect it may have been Michie or something with a similar sound.
Hope this adds to our understanding of the line rather than causing confusion.
